Weather Machine Shifts Gears Talk
Dave Barrons retired a few years back as the weatherman for television Channel 9 and 10.  His program will tell about weather change, the driving forces behind it, and what we can do about it.  As he explains, and we all know from the light winter and the premature spring in Michigan, weather patterns are increasingly topsy-turvy.  You will be entertained as well as educated, so please plan to join us.  The program will start after a short business meeting.  All attendees are eligible to win the doorprize.  Raffle ticket sales will support SAAS nature education activities.  After the program, refreshments will be served.

April 14
Plants as Air Purifiers and other Natural Household Cleaners Demonstration
All ages are welcome to this event.  The air-purifying qualities of certain species of houseplants will be presented so that you can reduce airborne toxins in your home.  Hands-on potting and propagation tips will be enjoyed, too.  Ann Gildner will also answer questions about any ailing houseplants you wish to bring.  The second half of the program by Rose Rynerson will present some basic science on how cleansers and disinfectants work so that you can reduce your usage of dangerous chemicals.  Making your own cleaners will be demonstrated, and cedar-scented vinegar will be taken home by all the guests.

April 15
Growing Healthy Foods Talk
Lynda and Don Tracey of Tracey Farm: Produce and Products will present this program on how you can grow more of your own food, and make it healthier.  You will learn the basics of organic gardening, or at least using less poison to grow your food.  Other ways of handling pests will be explained, so that your vegetables and fruits are healthier to eat.  What are the advantages of heritage varieties and how can one obtain them?  What plants grow well in short northern Michigan summers?  Come enjoy these popular speakers and experienced produce gardeners as they share some of their extensive knowledge and experience.  They will also tell about the role of the Farm Bureau and the new farmers' market opening this summer.  Refreshments will be provided after the program.

Bicycle the North Central State Trail Trip
Jim Conboy, volunteer with the Top of Michigan Trails Council, will lead a bicycle ride on the North Central State Trail.  Jim welcomes one and all, and any type of bicycle well do – the trail's surface will handle any type of tire.  Riders will be back to the Armory by noon.  For those not sure they want to do 2 hours, volunteers will head back with you whenever you want.  The ride is designed for those from age 10 to 90 who may not have ridden much of late, and maybe never on the trail.  The idea is fun; it is not a race, just a leisurely jaunt along Michigan's best rail trail.

A steep descent on a recently-constructed staircase will take us into the gorge, or canyon, formed by underground seepage. The trail winds comfortably down Carp Creek, crosses Hogsback Road, and ultimately ends at Burt Lake. You will see evidence of beavers and note differences in climate and plants between the bottom of the gorge and the surrounding high land.
