THANKING CHEBOYGAN COUNTY FOR EARTH WEEK 2010
Earth Week Cheboygan County 2010 snowballed far beyond expectations by its lead sponsor, Straits Area Audubon Society. Over nine days, nearly 1,000 attendees enjoyed and learned from 31 family events. This community outreach to celebrate, appreciate, and protect our area's natural resources was enabled by 75 financial sponsors and advertisers and dozens of volunteers.
Although we cannot list everyone, thanks begin with the Straits Area Concerned Citizens for Peace and Justice and the National Wildlife Federation. These groups led the first three Earth Day celebrations in Cheboygan that built the base for this year.
Credit for planning the 2010 full week of activities goes to a core committee that met ten times since November, with some of the many jobs they took on: Brenda Archambo (publicity), Jim Bricker (sponsors), Marie Bartlett (liaison), Gloria Cadwalader (road signs), Judi Chimner (youth sculpture contest), Maureen Conklin (sponsors), Laren Corie (radio talk shows), Roy MacFarland (webmaster), Jeanette Mateer (youth poster contest), Randy Mateer (map design), Cindy Lou Poquette (Celebration hostess), Terry Riegler (photography), Rose Rynerson (events), and Judy Vanderhart (church outreach). St. Paul's Methodist Church and St. Thomas Lutheran Church distributed event schedules to their congregations.
Mostly, we thank the 975 attendees who learned more about the earth, making it all worthwhile.
In response to requests for promoting a more responsible land ethic and healthy local food education, a followup planning meeting is set for May 26, 6 to 8 pm potluck, open to the public. For more information, contact Kathy Bricker, 231-627-4830 or kathyhomeaccount@hotmail.com.
